1998–2007

By the end of the 90s, Reis decided to scale down his design practice and return to Marin County. He opened a small studio in San Rafael and provided package design, catalog design, and art direction for Smith & Hawken, Williams Sonoma, and Restoration Hardware. A rapidly expanding candle and home decor retailer, Illuminations, engaged Reis for branding, packaging, merchandising, and marketing materials. Pressured for intensive design participation, Reis agreed to become the in-house creative director and moved his studio to the Illuminations headquarters in Sonoma County.

Simultaneously, Reis moved his residence to Yorkville in rural Mendocino County.The hilltop property with its expansive views provided a retreat from the frantic corporate environment. When his commitment to Illuminations came to an end, Reis transferred his studio to Yorkville. There, embedded in the rural community, he found inspiration to fuel his creativity. New design possibilities surfaced for Reis in food, wine, and hospitality, including a vacation rental business called Ravenridge Cottages created on the property with two remodeled cottages.
